Think the Algarve is all about bustling tourist hubs and crowded beaches? Think again! If you’re craving a more relaxed vibe with fewer crowds, here’s your guide to the non-touristy Algarve, complete with charming towns and breathtaking beaches.

Burgau, Algarve

Quaint towns to stay or visit

1. Burgau

This little fishing village is often called the “smiling village,” and it’s easy to see why. Tucked between cliffs and the sea, Burgau has a laid-back atmosphere and a picture-perfect beach. Wander through its cobbled streets, enjoy fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant, and soak up the charm of this hidden gem.

My personal recommendations to stay:

Make sure to check out my beach flat in Burgau. I rent it out on Airbnb, VRBO, Booking or RentalValley when I'm not there!

2. Salema

Salema is another small fishing village that’s managed to stay under the radar. It’s ideal for those looking for peace and quiet. The beach here is stunning, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot ancient dinosaur footprints in the cliffs nearby!

3. Monchique

Head inland to Monchique, a mountain town surrounded by lush greenery and natural springs. It’s a fantastic spot for a slower pace of life. Don’t miss trying the local medronho (a traditional fruit brandy) and exploring the nearby Foia, the highest point in the Algarve.

My personal recommendations to stay:

4. Aljezur

Aljezur is perfect for history buffs and nature lovers alike. The town is divided by a river and is known for its medieval castle ruins and fertile fields. From here, you’re also close to some of the Algarve’s most stunning wild beaches.

5. Monte Clérico

Monte Clérico is a tiny, quiet village on the west coast. It’s a great base for exploring nearby beaches and enjoying the untouched beauty of this part of the Algarve. With its peaceful vibe, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

My personal recommendations to stay:

Non-Touristy Beaches

1. Praia da Cordoama This wild and windswept beach on the west coast is a favorite for surfers and adventurers. Surrounded by towering cliffs, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy some solitude and dramatic scenery.

2. Praia da Vale de Centeanes Located near Carvoeiro, this beach feels worlds away from the busier spots nearby. Framed by golden cliffs, it’s a serene place to relax and soak up the sun.

3. Islands in Front of Faro Take a boat trip from Faro to discover the stunning barrier islands of the Ria Formosa. These islands, such as Ilha Deserta and Ilha do Farol, offer pristine beaches and a sense of seclusion that’s hard to beat.

4. Meia Praia While larger than some of the other beaches on this list, Meia Praia near Lagos still manages to maintain a relaxed vibe. Its long stretch of sand means there’s plenty of room to find your own private spot.

5. Praia da Figueira This secluded beach is a bit of a trek to reach, but it’s so worth it. Hidden by cliffs and accessible only by foot, Praia da Figueira feels like a true secret escape.

6. Furnas and Ingirna Beaches These lesser-known beaches are tucked away on the west coast. They’re perfect for those who want to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in nature. Bring a picnic and enjoy the peace and quiet.
