How to rent a car at Faro aiport: everything you need to know

Updated: Aug 26

If you're planning a trip to the stunning Algarve, renting a car at Faro Airport can be a great way to explore the area's beautiful beaches, charming towns, and scenic landscapes at your own pace. In this guide I will walk you through everything you need to know about renting a car at Faro Airport, from booking to driving in Portugal and where to go!

Why Rent a Car at Faro Airport?

Faro Airport is the main Airport of the Algarve. With a rental car, you can easily reach famous beach towns (click here for my favorites!) like Carvoeiro, Lagos, and Sagres. Public transportation is available but can be limited, especially if you want to explore more remote areas.

Step 1: Book Your Rental Car in Advance

Compare Prices Online

Start by comparing prices from different car rental companies online. Websites like Discovercars.com allow you to compare deals from major international brands as well as local providers. Booking in advance can save you money, especially during peak tourist seasons. To help you out, I've already listed my favorite car rentals for you.

Choose the Right Car

Consider the type of car that best suits your needs. If you're traveling as a couple or solo, a compact car might be sufficient. For families or groups, a larger vehicle or an SUV might be more comfortable. If you plan on exploring off-the-beaten-path locations, consider renting a vehicle with a higher clearance.

Rental Conditions

Before finalizing your booking, carefully read the rental conditions. Pay attention to factors such as:

  • Mileage limitations: Ensure the rental includes unlimited mileage, especially if you plan to explore extensively.

  • Fuel policy: Some rentals require you to return the car with a full tank of fuel, while others offer different options.

  • Insurance coverage: Basic insurance is typically included, but you might want to consider additional coverage for peace of mind.

  • Second driver: I personally like it when you can change drivers every now and then. Booking an extra driver in advance is usually much cheaper!

Step 2: Picking Up Your Rental Car at Faro Airport

Arrival at Faro Airport

After landing at Faro Airport (FAO), follow the signs to the car rental area. Most car rental companies have desks inside the airport terminal, but some may require a short shuttle ride to their off-site locations.

Documentation Required

When you arrive at the rental desk, be prepared to present the following documents:

  • Booking confirmation: A printed or digital copy of your booking confirmation.

  • Driver's license: Your valid driver's license and, if necessary, an International Driving Permit.

  • Credit card: A credit card in the driver's name for the security deposit. Debit cards may not be accepted by all rental companies.

  • Passport or ID: For identification purposes.

Inspect the Car

Before driving off, thoroughly inspect the car for any existing damage. Take photos or videos of any scratches, dents, or other issues, and report them to the rental agent. This will help avoid disputes when returning the car.

Step 3: Navigating the Algarve

Driving in Portugal

Driving in the Algarve is generally straightforward, with well-maintained roads and clear signage. However, there a few things to keep in mind:

  • Tolls: The A22 motorway, which runs along the Algarve, is a toll road. Some rental cars are equipped with an electronic transponder to pay tolls automatically. You'll usually pay a little extra for it but in my opnion, it's worth the hassle!

  • Parking: Parking is usually easy to find in smaller towns, but can be challenging in busier tourist spots during peak season.

  • Narrow streets: If you're not used to driving in narrow European streets, it's a good idea to avoid tiny streets in the town centers like Lagos. You'll see plenty of tight corners where other cars have already left their mark on the walls 😉

Conclusion

Renting a car at Faro Airport is a great way to explore the Algarve on your terms. By booking in advance, choosing the right vehicle, and understanding the local driving rules, you can enjoy a hassle-free car rental experience and make the most of your time in this beautiful region of Portugal.

Whether you're planning a relaxing beach holiday or an adventurous road trip, a rental car provides the freedom and flexibility to create unforgettable memories in the Algarve.
