Wondering how to get to and in the Algarve and how to get around? You're in the right place! 👇
Airport
Faro Airport (Algarve airport)
The main airport in the Algarve is Faro airport right outside the city of Faro. This is the easiest option to fly to as this airport is situated quite central in the Algarve. From here most places in the Algarve are within less than a 1 hour drive.
Lisbon Airport
If you need a 3 hour+ transfer at Lisbon Airport to get to Faro airport, you can also choose to drive to the Algarve from Lisbon. It's about a 2.5 hour drive down to the Algarve. If you have the time, I recommend to take the scenic route along the coast. It's beautiful! It's also possible to take a train down south which takes about 4 hours.
How to get around
Rent a car
The Algarve is great for driving. Highways are fairly empty and take you trough beautiful scenic routes. I would recommend to avoid driving in Algarve town centers as streets can be very narrow (scratched a few cars already 😥). Towns are relatively far apart and with all the beautiful beaches to explore a car is the way to get around. To make it easy for you I already did some field research for you for the best car rentals at Faro Airport.
Transfer from the Airport
There are several ways to get to where ever you're staying in the Algarve. However, public transfer is not great. Cheap, but not great. Bigger places like Lagos and Faro are easy to get to but the smaller towns, especially more west, are difficult to get to.
