January in the Algarve: What it's like and where to stay

Updated: 5 days ago

Dreaming of getting away from the winter cold? The Algarve stands out as one of Europe's sunniest spots, even in January! I love spending the winter here. Although January might be cooler and a bit rainier, I still recommend it. Why? It's not only because of the affordable off-season rates—there are plenty of other reasons to love it. Let me provide you with all the specifics. 👇

The weather and what to pack

January is one of the Algarve’s cooler months, yet it still offers sunny days with temperatures averaging around 16–18°C (59–63°F). The mild daytime weather is perfect for enjoying outdoor activities, and on sunnier days, it's t-shirt weather for sure.

When packing, include both beachwear for those sunny intervals and warmer clothing like a jumper, light jacket, and perhaps a beanie for the cooler evenings or visits to the breezy west coast. While the ocean may be too chilly for a swim, January is fantastic for outdoor adventures, like hiking or even surfing.

Where to stay for

the best Januari weather

In January, the warmest spots in the Algarve are found in the eastern and central regions. As you head west, especially near Sagres, the weather turns cooler and windier. For the best accommodations, focus on the stretch between the Spanish border and Salema. Sheltered beaches like Praia dos Três Castelos offer a perfect escape for enjoying the coast while staying protected from brisk winds.

While January isn’t the time for classic bikini beach days, it’s ideal for those who love the outdoors and are looking to soak up some winter sun.

Pitoresque beach town accommodations

Ready to soak up the sun and enjoy the laid-back vibes of the Algarve beach towns? Opt for one of the bigger, but oh-so-cute villages in the area for an unforgettable experience. While some smaller spots might be snoozing, these lively destinations are calling your name:
