The 7 hanging valleys trail in the Algarve: A hiker’s dream

If you’re looking for the ultimate coastal hike in the Algarve, let me introduce you to the 7 Hanging Valleys Trail. This stunning coastal trek is often ranked as one of the best hiking routes in Europe, and trust me, it’s easy to see why! With jaw-dropping cliffs, hidden beaches, and turquoise waters that stretch as far as the eye can see, this trail is an unforgettable way to explore the natural beauty of southern Portugal.

Where Does the 7 Hanging Valleys Trail Start?

The trail starts near Praia da Marinha, which, by the way, is one of the most Instagram-worthy beaches in the world. (Seriously, you’ll want to charge your phone for all the photos you’ll take!) It’s easily accessible by car, and there’s parking available nearby. The route officially ends at Praia de Vale Centeanes, but of course, you can hike it in either direction.

How difficult is the trail?

The 7 Hanging Valleys Trail isn’t overly challenging, but it’s not exactly a walk in the park either. I’d rate it as moderate. The distance is around 5.7 kilometers (one way), so a round-trip will total about 11-12 kilometers. There are some steep sections and uneven terrain, so good hiking shoes are a must. If you’re reasonably fit, you’ll manage just fine—but don’t forget to pack water and sunscreen, especially if you’re hiking in the warmer months!

Highlights along the way

Oh, where to start? The whole trail is a highlight reel of the Algarve’s best coastal scenery. Here are some of my favorite spots:

  • Praia da Marinha: This is where the adventure begins (or ends). Golden cliffs, dramatic arches, and crystal-clear waters—it’s the definition of paradise.

  • Benagil Cave: While you can’t see the famous cave directly from the trail, there are viewpoints nearby. It’s worth taking a detour for a closer look if you have time. Check out the Benagil caves from inside!

  • Carvalho Beach: A hidden gem along the route. If you’re feeling adventurous, climb down and take a quick dip!

  • The Seven Valleys Viewpoints: These are scattered along the way and offer jaw-dropping views of the cliffs and sea. Bring binoculars if you’re into birdwatching.

Where to stop for lunch

There aren’t any restaurants directly on the trail, but you’ll find some fantastic options at either end:

  • Near Praia da Marinha, you can grab a quick snack before starting your hike.

  • Benagil, you'll find a few beach bars in Benagil but on the steap way down you'll come across one of my fave places, O Pescador!

  • Praia de Vale Centeanes, have a fresh seafood lunch or drinks at O Stop with your feet in the sand!

If you’re packing your own lunch, there are loads of scenic spots along the trail to sit down and enjoy your meal. Imagine munching on a sandwich with the Atlantic stretching out in front of you—pure bliss!

Best seasons to walk the trail

The Algarve is known for its amazing weather, but the best times to tackle the 7 Hanging Valleys Trail are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). The temperatures are milder, and the crowds are thinner compared to the summer months. If you’re hiking in the summer, start early in the morning to beat the heat—and the crowds!

Final thoughts & tips

If you’re planning to hike in the Algarve, the 7 Hanging Valleys Trail should be at the top of your list. It’s the perfect combination of natural beauty, moderate challenge, and unforgettable views. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just someone looking for a bit of adventure, this trail has something for everyone. Go on the best coastal hike yet!

Tip: Extend your hike to Carvoeiro and end your day with a refreshing drink in this charming beach town.

So, lace up your hiking boots, pack some snacks, and hit the trail. The Algarve is waiting to wow you!

Happy hiking!
