Are you looking for a stunning vacation destination with beautiful hotels and vacation homes, great weather, and plenty of activities? Then head to The Algarve in May! This is one of the best months to visit this beautiful region, as the landscape is still green and lush, temperatures are perfect, and it's not too crowded.
In this post, I'll cover everything you need to know about The Algarve in May, from the weather, to what to pack, things to do, and where to stay.
The weather in May
May is the perfect month to visit The Algarve if you're looking for reliably sunny weather. The warm sun and perfect temperatures, with an average of 22-24 degrees (feels much warmer during day time) Celsius, make it a great time to travel. It's not too hot, but definitely beach weather and mild enough for outdoor activities.
What to pack
The warm Algarve sun is very strong in May, so make sure to bring a good sunscreen. Although it can be quite warm during the day, remember to bring something warm for early mornings and evenings. Temperatures in May are lovely for having dinner outdoors, spending time at the beach, and wandering around old towns in the evenings. Still, bring a sweater and maybe even a light jacket to keep you warm later at night. With the warm daytime temperatures, don't forget to bring beachwear and explore the beautiful Algarve beaches. If you love hiking, bring some hiking shoes and enjoy stunning cliff hikes!
So don't forget: 😉
High protection sunscreen
Sweater or light jacket for evenings
Beach wear and summer clothes
Hiking shoes (or trail shoes) and/or equipment and outfits for any other sports you plan on doing.
Things to do in May
May is the perfect month to travel to The Algarve if you love the warm Algarve sun but want to avoid the hot 30+ temperatures in summer. It's warm enough for activities like exploring beaches, dinners on the terrace, and swimming, but still mild enough to enjoy activities like hiking, horse riding, bird watching, and climbing! If you love surfing or like to take a lesson, you'll also find some waves around in May, especially on the west coast of The Algarve.

Where to stay (area)
Where you'd like to stay in The Algarve all depends on what you want to get out of your trip. If you're interested in a beach holiday with lots of chilling at the beach and pool, we recommend you stay at the more central or eastern part of The Algarve. The Algarve is filled with idyllic beach towns on white sandy coves with crooked white-washed houses. You'll find tiny non-touristy towns towns like Burgau and Salema, and larger towns with many facilities and lively town centers like Lagos, Praia da Luz and Carvoeiro. If you like some peace and quiet for your holiday, you'll also find plenty of unspoiled, quiet, and peaceful towns in this beautiful region.

Another great thing about staying in the Algarve in May are the prices! Prices in May are higher comparing to wintertime but accommodation is much cheaper then it is in high season (July - August)! It’s still possible to pick up a bargain Airbnb, hotel or stay at a surf house.
